Boost Our Student's Future with Greener, Healthier Schools

As a parent and member of Safe Green Schools, I urge the Columbus School Board to vote in favor of the Safe Green Schools resolution on February 4th. This initiative goes beyond building upgrades — it’s an investment in our children’s future and our city’s legacy.

The clean energy transition offers a triple win. First, it will save the district millions in energy costs. With funding available through the federal Inflation Reduction Act, we can secure money for meaningful building improvements. Energy-efficient schools that eventually generate their own power will reduce operating costs, freeing up funds for teacher salaries and other essential improvements.

Second, green schools will prepare our students for future job opportunities. The clean energy sector is booming, and Columbus is already a leader with initiatives like Clean Energy Columbus. By modernizing our schools, we can create hands-on learning experiences, apprenticeship programs, and vocational training in renewable energy and sustainable building management.

Most importantly, this resolution will directly benefit our children. Imagine classrooms with clean, filtered air and comfortable temperatures year-round — environments where students can focus on learning without the distractions of asthma triggers or extreme conditions.

Voting “yes” on this resolution will position CCS as a leader, showing other districts what’s possible while sending a powerful message of hope and care to our children: they are worth it.

The time for action is now. Let’s invest in safe, green schools for the health and success of our students and the future of our community.
